While I was sick, I had a lot of time to lay around and think. There was once a time when I walked into a space and immediately had it redesigned in my mind. I’d find something I like, and figure out how to build on the design to make it closer to my own voice.
I used to design everywhere I went, be it artistically, writing, lesson plans, etc. I used to be a designer. That’s why this site is Rebecca Thomas Designs. I’m Rebecca Thomas. I used to not be able to stop myself from designing. (I’ve always loved that line from Will and Grace.)
While I was sick, I found myself watching an inordinate number of reality shows. For a girl who prefers anything animated to anything “reality”, this was clearly a cry for help. One of the shows, though, really got into my head. Top Design has actually reminded me of my designing past, a life that seems to have vanished when I agreed to give up on myself. It’s given me a kick that I probably needed if I truly want to reclaim that part of myself. I’ve revamped my EverNote to better reflect my inner designer. I’m trying to plan out the room redesign that’s part of my 2007 to-do list. I’m trying to build myself up to owning a design notebook, but I’m willing to take baby steps.
I’ve never lost my creativity, just my unstoppable need to design. For those trying to find their own creativity, I’ve found a couple of great lists that might just help kick-start you!
