Another WriYe verification period is upon us, and I’m pleased to point out that I’m making progress. Not as much as I would have liked, but definitely more than I was anticipating given what I’m currently working on. For example, I’m rethinking Dead Bunny‘s work, which has led to a lot of brainstorming, rearranging, and reworking. Not a single word of that counts. But I’m also rewriting one of my older NaNoWriMo stories, and that does add to the word count.

Working on rewriting this novel has been interesting. I’ve been a storyteller most of my life. Usually, I write my stories in a short story or novel format, and this works because I can see the action going on in my head and then describe it on the paper. Over the past year, though, I’ve been learning about writing scripts for graphic novels and games because I am curious about using both to create instructional material. So, now when I see the action play out in my head, I want to shape it into a script instead of paragraphs.

This led to a funny moment not too long ago where I had to describe a character explaining something to her sisters, and I just couldn’t do it. Every attempt to help this poor woman just lacked adequate description. In frustration, I realized the scene would be so much easier if I could just create an art description for what she was doing. For a brief moment, I even considered scrapping the novel and rewriting the entire thing as a script. Then, I realized that if I could write an art description, I could probably write the paragraph description.

It was a very enlightening experience, using the script that wanted to be written to get past the block. I may have to remember that the next time I’m stuck.

  • If this (http://ow.ly/l8N2) is true, then does that mean we should teach more through analogy and metaphor? Isn't that constructivist? #
