I’d wondered how long it was going to take me to resort to oneword when I didn’t have something trying to crawl its way out of me. And I was starting to think it would be March before one of these entries involved writing. It turns out that it was only four days before either happened.

Today’s word at oneword is “tower”, and here’s my contribution to the pile:

He stood on the tower looking out over the forest north of the castle. He didn’t know why, but he always felt like the forest grew larger and closer after the sun set. He’d felt that way since he was a young squire.

It’s all of 43 words, but it’s down. I could probably grow that into something, set it in one of half a dozen worlds mostly of my own creation. But that’s not really the point of this particular exercise, is it?

Or maybe it is. I haven’t really thought about “the point” of these creative entries yet. Maybe you guys can help me figure that out.

For those unfamiliar with oneword, you’re given a single word prompt and a text editor that times you for a minute. At the end of the minute, you are prompted to finish your current sentence, add your name, and submit your creation. You then get to see how others responded. It’s fun. It’s a quick and easy way to get writing. I’ve been known to do the day’s word, and then build a short story from that minute’s work. If you want to write but can’t seem to get started, it’s a pretty painless way to go.
