Create365: Colorful Socks
Filed Under art class | View Comments
The Challenge: Figure out a way to add some color to your day in a new, unusual, or wacky way.
Spring and Winter flip-flopped in Seattle this year. After an uncomfortably warm Winter, we’re now coasting on cooler temperatures into Spring. It’s the perfect weather for warmer socks, and the perfect time for this challenge because some of the warmest socks I own are my toe socks!

In terms of the Create365 project, I’m still exploring what settings are available to me and how to use them to minimize the time spent in photo-editing software. This particular picture is completely untouched, and I’m proud of how it turned out.

Create365: Wearable Stories

I was getting dressed for work this morning and noticed the bowl that holds some of my more frequently worn or recently acquired jewelry, and I just really liked how the pieces were laying in there.

I don’t know if they translate into this post, but most of the more visible pieces have notes on them. Some were hand-crafted. Some I just keep for fun.

My cat hates being covered by anything. If I throw a blanket over her, she quickly wriggles out. So when I accidentally threw my flannel shirt on her tonight, I definitely wasn’t expecting her response:

That would be my cat, stretching out to take a nap…under my flannel shirt.
(She also hates having her picture taken, going so far as to run and hide when she sees the dark green thing in my hands, so the fact I got several shots of her making herself at home under the shirt was just phenomenal.)

Create365: Reading List, Revisited
Filed Under art class | View Comments
This post was inspired by my brother threatening to document my “accomplishment”.
When the weekend began, I had eight books on my to-read shelf and a killer sore throat. Today, I have four books on my to-read shelf and am just starting to get my voice back. In the interim, I got sick, lost my voice, and read a few books. I figured it was a good way to keep myself occupied while I couldn’t do much else except watch the Olympics and pick on a friend.
I did start a book tonight, but for the record (and for my brother’s book of his sister’s more odd accomplishments) this is how my shelf now looks:

There are two things of note in this picture. The more obvious one is that the books all now fit in the tiny space between the speaker and the wall of the bookshelf. The less obvious one is that it took me several attempts to get a clean shot because I was experimenting with various light settings. It turns out I’m not adept enough to freehand the setting needed for the light in my room, but the flash setting worked well in this case. (Usually, it’s the other way around for me.)
I may need to consider finding a tripod.

Create365: Splashing Rain

It’s been raining all week (in Seattle? Go figure!), but today’s rain just had a beauty to it that distracted me from my work for part of the afternoon. I decided to try to capture it, but I walked out right as the rain started falling harder. My skills being what they are already, it wasn’t the best combination to really get a good shot, but I like how this one turned out:

Create365: A Friendly Car

This morning was actually icy and overcast, something this area hasn’t seen much of this winter. I opened the curtains and noticed a friend’s car smiling at me from the driveway.
It took a few shots (and a reminder to actually step closer to the car to get my shot), but I finally succeeded in capturing its soul.

While I was editing, I experimented with cropping a little bit. Instead of just cropping to the entire car like I normally would, I focused in on the smile itself. I really like the result!

A friend was drawing on the whiteboard in our dining room and I asked him why he kept drawing Disney characters. He had drawn Mickey and Pluto. Mickey was looking a bit…well…high. I commented on it, and then I bravely made my own attempt at drawing him.

Please don’t laugh. We all know my artistic abilities are sorely lacking.

Create365: The Purple Monkey

Have you ever had one of those days where you’ve finished a couple of major tasks and you have a little time left over? So, you look over your to-do list to see what could neatly fit into that time, and before you know it, Play-Doh’s in your hand, and you’re trying to figure out how to build a monkey?

Clearly, I have.
For whatever reason, I felt the need to make really long arms and tail, but I think he did come out looking relatively like a monkey.

When I first envisioned my living/work space a few years ago, I wanted colored walls and neutral linens. I almost got what I wanted. My walls are lilac. Some of my accents are nutmeg. There was a plan for sage linens that never materialized.
Fie years of living in this soothing color scheme wears on your activity level after a while, though, so I’ve been thinking about how I’d like to revamp the color scheme. I’m thinking about moving my nutmeg to the walls, and maybe switching the lilac for a rich shade of blue.

Color by COLOURlovers
Oddly enough, this was inspired by a towel thrown over a shirt. I’m not sure how I feel about the middle color, but attempts to apply color theory to the initial blue (#1) and brown (#2) made me cringe. I do love the richness of colors, and I think the browns would give this space a warmth it’s been sorely lacking for the past few years.
On a positive note, I got to name two colors: Shallow Waters and Wet Sand. There are so many “discovered” colors on the site that this is actually a bit of an accomplishment.

The Challenge: Do one thing today to support a cause or issue you really care about.

(For clarification, this is not the actual logo, just a thought on how I would have approached it.)
Locks of Love is an organization that accepts donations of hair and turns them into hairpieces for children who for medical reasons don’t have their own hair. It’s meant to help boost the child’s self-esteem and bolster their spirits during a rough time in their life.
It’s easy to help out. If you’re cutting off ten or more inches, you can have it cut off in a ponytail or braid and then send it in. There are more specific guidelines here, and many salons offer a free cut if you’re donating to Locks of Love. Some will even send in the hair for you after you fill out the paperwork.
I’ve done it twice so far, and I know many people who’ve participated repeatedly in the program as donors who are looking forward to donating again. If you’re looking for a way to give back or help out, you might look into Locks of Love.
