I'm unhappy if I don't have any time in my week for daydreaming, and when I am unhappy I never create.

I also tend to find that I prefer poetry with any subject other than emotional suffering, which seems to be the most commonly attempted area.

I recognise the defense you covered above from my father's T'ien Ti Tao classes

I've only ever drafted one fight scene so far, and I've not got the notes to hand right now. I did use the odd bit of experience in real life observation, but I also used what I had seen to work in fight scenes I have enjoyed reading.

We did have one or two classes on this in English classes, but I can barely remember. I never got to the point where scripts were discussed in medis studies.

I agree about the lack of resources and guides. I wouldn't mind reading a few reliable guides myself, e.g. a guide prepared by the royal institute of stage directors, a fictional group invented by me to represent the real groups out there.. um.

My idea of script writing is about the same as yours, with a few vaguely remembered tips about how to format the text thrown in.

What we did do, is go on to read the scripts of a couple of well-known plays, so we could see how the professionals had already done it.

Yeah, most of my research ended up focusing on manga scripts that had been made available online.

There really does need to be some sort of beginner guide to creating scripts.

Do you have a copy of The Writers' and Artists' Yearbook?

Just flicking through my 2003 copy, magazines andnewspapers are asking for anywherefrom 500-4000 words.

It states that children's fiction is 1000 to 8000 words long and for young (9-12) novels 20,000-40,000.

The example letters it gives for adult fiction show 87,000. I have always had the impression 80,000 is pretty standard but I cannot remember where from. More information might be available from publishers websites.

Amazon. I've never spotted the Children's one before, I will have to ask for it for xmas as that is where I will start…

anyway, it cintains lists ofpublishing houses, newspapers, nagazines, comic places etc. It tells you their contact details and which genres they are and are not interested in adn givesyou key advice concerning what your manuscripts and letters to them should and should not look like.

Rather a handy resource for anyone serious about being published.
